After World War II and the creation of the Jewish State of Israel, thousands of Jewish Eastern European immigrants fled to Israel and brought with them their food. Today, Ashkenazi cuisine is as much a part of the Israeli food scene as hummus or falafel. Cafe Batya prepares some of the best Eastern European flavors around and is especially famous for their version of the Jewish classic chopped liver.
