Overview
This church was constructed in 1843 as a consequence of the breakaway of a large section of the Church of Scotland. The new church opened its doors on 11th June 1843, the first minister being Rev. John Robertson. The membership of the church that year was 164 out of a total parish population of just over 1,000. This church became known as the North Church and the existing church, located on Main Street, became the South Church. This arrangement continued until 20th September 1935 when the two churches were reunited. The North Church was subsequently converted into a private dwelling with an internal swimming pool. Whether the font was enlarged to create this facility is not known.
One of the Free Church ministers published a book of poetry. This was the Rev. A Crighton Alexander who was in office as the Free Church minister from July 1904 to September 1907. Considering the quality of his poetic offerings, it is hoped that he never gave up his day job.
