The SOSSC is open to the public offering guided tours, displays of various research projects, a donation store, a large fish tank displaying local species, screenings of numerous documentaries produced by the SOS Foundation, as well as popular talks given by one of our team members. The SOSSC is also involved in numerous other exciting awareness initiatives: ocean and beach clean-ups, running the Rethink the Shark campaign, producing documentaries, participating in festivals, and much more.

You can book an outreach programme, or bring a tourist group to visit us; or just pop in and meet the team. The SOSSC is open week days 10am to 4pm.

The purpose of the centre is to improve the public's understanding of sharks and marine conservation through scientific research, education and awareness projects.

Save Our Seas Foundation is a non-profit making organisation headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. Its purpose is to implement and support diverse programmes centered around the protection of the Earth's marine environment. Its Advisory Committee discusses allocation of funds, sponsorship and policy; the Foundation is privately funded and has sufficient means to cover its administrative costs, insuring that all future donations and sponsorships are able to go directly towards helping worthy marine projects.

These four principles act as the heart of the Foundation's mission in providing the inspiration for the urgent preservation of the planet's marine heritage.

The Save Our Seas Shark Centre's (SOSSC) mission is to encourage awareness, protection, conservaton and the sustainable use of sharks worldwide through research, education and awareness.

The SOSSC is a 'Rethink the Shark' experience that inspires a shift from the inherent negative perceptions of sharks to one of awe and wonder.

Through the leadership of Lesley Rochat, who is the Executive Manager and Director of Education, Verona Smith, the Educator, is reponsible for teaching school learners. In partnership with the City of Cape Town, previously disadvantaged learners, are brought to the centre for an educational outing highlighted by a lesson on the importance of sharks, a rock ecology lesson next to the Dalebrook Tidal Pool given by Michael Carnegie, the viewing of a documentary, followed by a snack around the pool. Many local schools have booked to visit the centre and we encourage school teachers to bring their learners to the centre for a truly fun-filled three hours.

The Scientific Research projects are run by Dr Leonard Compagno, the Research Director, and our Marine Biologist, Alison Kock is very busy with her research on the Great White in False Bay.
