The Durban Botanic Gardens was established in 1849. The main attractions of the gardens are the rare cycad Encephalartos woodii and the Orchid house, which is best visited in Spring when the plants are flowering. The other main attractions include the visitors' centre, which has been landscaped with indigenous plants, the small indigenous forest and the large pond, which attracts a number of water birds.
