Supporting a person affected by cancer can be one of the most rewarding and fulfilling volunteering experiences, we are currently looking for volunteers to help us ensure that no one in Glasgow faces cancer alone.

Macmillan @ Glasgow Libraries is a volunteer-led cancer information and support service, we have designated spaces in libraries where anyone can access cancer information and a friendly chat with one of our volunteers. This is complemented by a number of monthly, bi-monthly and ad-hoc ‘outreach’ services based in a range of settings including Shopping Centres, Health Centres and other community venues.

The aim of the programme is to provide patients, family and friends affected by cancer with local access to cancer information, emotional support, and signposting to a range of different partner services. We are looking for volunteers from across the city to get involved in running both the library and ‘outreach’ services, making a real difference to the local community.

You don’t need to have a great knowledge of cancer, have experienced cancer or come from a Caring background to become a volunteer. What we are looking for is a willingness to listen to others and a warm personality. Our current volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds such as those who work part time, those seeking work, the retired and students.

We provide two and half days of accredited core training which will help in your role. This will cover communications skills, cancer awareness, equality and diversity and skills practice. We also provide a monthly learning programme of workshops to update your skills as you volunteer. In addition in your role you will be supported by your Macmillan Information and Support Officer.

In your role you will receive on-going training, support and out of pocket expenses. In exchange we ask for a regular time commitment to ensure we can provide our weekly library drop-in and outreach service in the community so that no one in Glasgow faces cancer alone.

The weekly library drop-in service at Drumchapel Library is every Thursday from 2-4pm. We are also looking for volunteers for the drop-in at Anniesland Library as well as various locations across the North East and South of the city as well - get in touch to find out more.
