Woods Tavern Site
Översikt
(circa 18th century)
"Site of the local landmark that gave this area of Hillsborough its name, a tavern may have existed on this site as early as the mid 18th century, although most records of that time referring to a tavern only name the taverns in Flaggtown and Millstone. The tavern which was destroyed by fire in 1932 appeared at that time to be from the early 19th century, and indeed appears on the maps of 1850, 1860 (where there is a drawing of the tavern in the margin), and 1873. Significant as a local and regional landmark defining the major crossroads of Route 206 and Amwell Rd., and for hosting a campaign stop for newspaper publisher Horace Greeley during his unsuccessful 1872 presidential bid, the site was recently adorned with a large marker containing a plaque and drawings of the tavern."
