As part of the Graveyard of the Atlantic, hundreds of shipwrecks have been documented to have occurred off the coast of Ocracoke. 11 of these have been identified. There are many online sources of information describing the interesting history of shipwrecks off the Ocracoke coast. After a storm, parts of old shipwrecks might be visible poking up from under the sand just about anywhere along Ocracoke's 12 miles of beach. If you are a diver, there are off shore shipwrecks for the experienced diver to explore. Some require highly experienced diving techniques; it is best to contact a local qualified dive charter guide to explore these areas.
