Bakklandet Kindergarten is one of the many kindergartens in Trondheim taking part in the Children's Green City programnme. The kindergarten was awarded the Children’s Green City Prize 2013 by Trondheim Municipality. Bakklandet kindergarten has two environmental projects: “From table to soil”, which teaches children how to grow organic food themselves, and "From table to soil", which focuses on composting of food wastes.

Children’s Green City is Trondheim Municipality's programme to inspire, motivate and help schools and kindergartens to get involved in environmental work. Under this programme schools and kindergarten that have environmental activities are evaluated and certified as Green Flag organisations. Green Flag is an international environmental certification scheme for schools and preschools.
