Saline Golf Club
Overview
Saline Golf Club
Saline Golf Club was established in 1912. The land was originally
rented. In 1938 there was a request for Sunday play and although
the proprietors raised no objections, the President, who was also the
local minister, drummed up enough support to have the motion defeated.
When the question was again raised in 1940, on the pretext that it would
only be a wartime measure, it was approved by 12 votes to 4. The
minister resigned his golf club position!
Cricket was played for many years in the eld between Upper Kinneddar
and the Oakley Road. After the Second World War the former cricket
clubhouse was purchased by the golf club and was re-erected in 1956. It
is now used as a machinery shed.
In the early 1960s the landlord of the golf course gave notice of raising
the rent threefold or the option of purchase at a price of £1500. A loan
was arranged from the district council, the ground was purchased and the
loan was eventually paid off in 1971.
On 16th June 2012 a celebration to commemorate both the Queen's Jubilee and the centenary of the club was held on the club grounds
