The Project: Earthworks to harvest roof and landscape runoff
Installation Date: February 8, 2014 and March 15, 2014
Location: Private residence, N 40th St and E Bell Rd, Phoenix
Workshop Leader(s): Ryan Wood
Number of Co-op Volunteers: 12 (Feb), 5 (Mar)
The homeowners wanted to capture rainwater and stop it from flowing off the property. They also wanted to create an area for native plants to beautify their front yard. To help capture this water 2 infiltration basins were designed each one with a surface volume of 600 gallons
.
Water is conveyed to the infiltration basins by means of swales and Zuni bowls.
Benefits:
A free water resource that once was wasted now creates beauty for the homeowners. Thirty native plants were planted in and around the infiltration basins, adding greenery and color where there once was none. These plants will: filter air, soil and water pollutants; create a moister microclimate; help infiltrate water and organic matter deep into the soil, making the soil more water absorbent; and attract native pollinators and other wildlife back into the urban setting.
