Desert Farm Initiative
![社区花园: Often planted on public or formerly abandoned land, community gardens are run by volunteers who cultivate vegetables or flowers and closer relationships to nature and one another. Generally open to all participants, they are sometimes fenced, locked or threatened by development. May offer hands-on learning and a habitat for birds and insects. 社区花园](https://www.opengreenmap.org/sites/default/files/taxonomy_image/category_pictures_77.gif)
![有机/土特产: Food grown close to where it is consumed, reducing shipping impacts and increasing freshness. Organic food is grown without pesticides (biocides), genetic modification or synthetic fertilizers. Minimally processed, with no chemicals or waxes added after harvesting. 概览
An urban farming project begun in early 2014, Desert Farm Initiative is a catalyst for creating community-driven farms. At its first location in Penn North/Sugar Hill, there are 21 plots and 2 green houses. Motivated by the large areas of food desert in Baltimore, the Desert Farm Initiative aims to provide the local community with the capacity to run community gardens and have access to fresh food. DFI hopes to create four more community farms in other neighborhoods in the future. Volunteers are welcomed to help out with lot clean-up, build raised beds and hoop houses, and to become farm ambassadors.
