概览
This four-store, white marble and glass facade building, overlooking the Square of the Three Powers, was designed by Oscar Niemeyer and is the seat of the Brazilian Executive Power. It was also one of the first buildings in the capital, being inaugurated on April 21st 1960, the same day as of the new capital. In addition, the Planalto Palace, along with the Supreme Court and the Alvorada Palace, is part of the first generation of monuments designed by Oscar Niemeyer for Brasilia.
The interior is decorated with sculpture, tapestry, rich works of art (some of which were created exclusively for the Palace, including 18th century furniture, Portuguese silver and pottery), contemporary papintings by renowned national and international artists such as DiCavalcanti and Bruno Giorgio, and a noteworthy panel by Burle Marx dedicated to author Mario de Andrade.
The ramp at the front facade is constantly guarded by two soldiers of the Dragons of Independence presidential guard, wearing uniforms as those of the Imperial Guard of Dom Pedro I. The palace houses ministerial meeting rooms, the president's office and civil and institutional security offices. The main rooms are: the Hearings Room, the Mirror Room and the Dispatch Room.
Like the residential palace, Planalto Palace keeps a tour program for public and private elementary schools in Brasilia, which includes civic orientation, transportantion and snacks for a group of forty students. General public can take guided tours on Sundays, from 9:30 am to 2pm, on a first-come-firt serve basis.
