Galapagos Art Space
Overview
Galapagos Art Space is a 9,000 square foot, Obie Award winning, cultural venue located in DUMBO, Brooklyn. Galapagos is about to become New York City’s first L.E.E.D certified "green" cultural venue. One of it's huge features is a 1600 square foot lake that is inside the building that serves as a geothermal/ground heat system during the summer and winter. Another feature of Galapagos' green building is it's HVAC systems which are regulated by occupancy sensors. 30% of the poured content flooring, lake basin, mezzanine and walls are recycled content and 100% of the steel used in the project is recycled. One of the questions that Galapagos Art Space answers on it's website is "why did we do it." Their answer, "we also wanted to prove something: if li’l-ole Galapagos Art Space can do it then so can any other performing arts facility, small business or building owner in New York City."
