Bupyeong Underground Tunnel (부평 토굴)
Overview
Bupyeong Underground Tunnel is a group of underground tunnels in Bupyeong which was made during the Japanese colonial era. There are two possible reasons why these underground tunnels were made. The first reason is that the Japanese Empire made these tunnels to store and make weapons during the World War 2. Another reason is that after the Japanese annexation of Korea, the Japanese army made Koreans dig these tunnels.
The tunnels are located in Sangok-dong, Hambong Mountain, and inside the Bupyeong military camp. The length of these tunnels are from 3~4 meters to 150 meters. They are stretched horizontally and the size is big enough that adults can freely go in and out.
In these tunnels, there are stalactites which size is maximum 70mm, which means that these tunnels are made in about 40 years before. Also, from the round holes made by the rock drill, it can be inferred that the underground tunnels are made using explosives.
These tunnels have been used as salted shrimp cave, summer resort and mushroom growing facility. Nowadays, Bupyeong-gu is holding an excursion program to the tunnels.
