Mission of the Immaculate Virgin for the Protection of Homeless and Destitute Children
概览
Completed in 1881, the ten-story building at this site, was built to house four hundred homeless and destitute children. In addition to living quarters, the structure contained a chapel, classrooms for the teaching of both job skills and basic education, a library, and the first rooftop playground in the city. Cooking was doen in the basement on a double-range stove. The hundred-gallon tank for making soup also supplied the neighborhood poor. Six months after the building opened, Father Drumgoole began construction of a second mission. This mission is still in operation as Mount Loretto on Staten Island. By necessity, women were also the object of Catholic charity.
The historic research contained in this Open Green Map is from the book: "Six Heritage Tours of the Lower East Side" by Ruth Limmer, in collaboration with NYC's Lower East Side Tenement Museum.
