Greenwich House
概览
Now private residences, these houses were the original site of the Cooperative Social Settlement Society (Greenwich House), founded in 1902. The settlement moved to its present location at 29 Barrow St. in 1917.
Mary Simkhovitch, the founder, chose to put her settlement house in this neighborhood because of its large and largely unserved Italian population. Or perhaps "undeserved" would be more accurate, given the size and needs of the population. The Greenwich House provided a baby clinic, classes in English and carpentry, and many social activities. And Ms. Simkhovitch, herself, well aware of where power lay, fought for the passage of protective labor laws and urged Italian factory workers, especially women, to join labor unions.
