These solar panels on the roof of North Quincy High School were installed on Earth Day 2004, shortly after a team of students successfully competed in the Massachusetts Envirothon. The team’s project focused on the installation of the solar panels and emphasized the value of renewable energy and energy conservation.
The 2kW system consists of eight photovoltaic panels. Data monitoring equipment, which records the energy production of the system, provides students with the ability to monitor its output and calculate its efficiency.
The installation of the panels was coordinated by the Massachusetts Energy Consumers Alliance (Mass Energy; www.massenergy.com) through an incentives program funded by the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative’s Renewable Energy Trust (www.mtpc.org/). Labor for the installation was donated by the IBEW Local 103 (www.ibew103.com) and performed by Lighthouse Electrical (http://lighthouse-electrical.com).
The installation was further subsidized by the customers of New England GreenStart, a program that allows customers of National Grid to choose clean, renewable electricity (www.massenergy.com/options.html).
