The Grain Terminal also known as The Gray House
概览
This is a very important Red Hook site. It was once was a cement factory, but now it is empty. This structure is called the grain terminal because it was originally built to house grain imported down the Erie Canal from the Midwest. Its most recent use, however, was as a cement factory. When it was still being used as a cement factory, cement was dumped into the Henry St. Basin below it, contributing to the pollution of the water surrounding Red Hook. The waterways in Red Hook were so polluted for such a long time that barely anything could live in the water. In recent years the water quality has vastly improved. Now, you can find ducks and geese swimming and flying around the Erie and Henry Street Basins. There is still some trash in the water though.
See the Red Hook Green Map sites Henry St. Basin: Polluted Water and Combined Sewage Overflow to find out more about the current state of water pollution in Red Hook.
